Welcome to Cupcake Week 1.0. A lot of low-level FBS and some FCS schools are playing road games at SEC foes to get a nice big check to fund their football programs for the year. Every once in a while, the little school refuses to comply with the script and wins the game (South Alabama). It’s usually just a week of yawners. There are a couple of exceptions, of course.

Western Kentucky at ‘Bama – WKU runs a run-till-you drop offense, but they won’t be able to use it against a bunch of monsters on defense. ‘Bama – I think I’m about to be sick – looks as good as ever. The Evil Empire 44, Hilltoppers 3

Ar-Kansas at TCU – One of the few intriguing matchups. The Hogs have to be better than they looked last week. Right? Purple Frogs With Horns 31, Pigs 21

Kentucky at Florida – Hey, it’s a cupcake game and a conference matchup all rolled into one. Lizards 51, Briars 17

Nicholls State at Georgia – Jim Valvano used to say NC State never played games like this because you should “never play a State that’s not a state.” In football, you can get away with it. Big Ol’ Hairy Dawgs 59, What State Is This 0

Jacksonville State at LSU – Another State that’s not a state. Even the putrid offense of LSU can handle this. LSU 38, The Other Gamecocks 10

Wofford at Misipi – Nice way for the Rebs to bounce back. Frozen Rebels 48, Jerry Richardson U 7

South Carolina at Misipi St – At times last week, SC looked on the verge of being decent. Today will provide no evidence either way. Fightin’ Chickens 20, Misipi St 17

Eastern Michigan at Missouri – I want to watch this game. Why EMU is at Charlotte next week. Mizzou 20, EMU 10

Tennessee vs. Virginia Tech (Bristol) – A football game at a NASCAR track. A fabulous idea. Too bad the teams aren’t fabulous. Vols 28, Hokies 24

Prairie View at Texas A&M – The Aggies actually do have some weapons. They’ll get to play with them this week. A&M 55, PVA&MU 3

Middle Tennessee at Vanderbilt – These two played last year, and Middle almost pulled off the upset. Vandy is so bad I don’t think it would be an upset this year. However….. Vandy 16 MTSU 14

Ar-Kansas State at Auburn – For a little while there, every coach ASU hired stayed 1 year then was swept away by a bigger program – Hugh Freeze (Misipi), Gus Mahlzan (Auburn), Bryan Harsin (Boise St). It’s finally caught up with them. Auburn has a good D after all. The offense better get going or Gus is going to be severely pressured to get a new OC. WAR EAGLE 28, Ar-Kansas St 10

Elon at Charlotte – They played in Charlotte’s second year in 2014, and Elon won at the last second. Charlotte is much better now, but 15 penalties at Louisville should have taught them that nothing is a given at this level. But this is FBS vs FCS, so that should decide the outcome. 49ers 34, Phoenixes 7

Last week’s record: 9-5
