It’s Week Before We Play Our Most Hated Rival Week. A few conference matchups, but lots of paycheck games to give teams a chance to rest their starters after building a 100-point halftime lead and give little brother enough money to fund his athletic department for another month. Let’s get to it!

Ar-Kansas at ‘Bama – This will probably be a repeat of what happened to the Hogs in Athens – a decent matchup on paper that will not materialize on the field. The Evil Empire 38, Pigs 10

Charleston Southern at Georgia – Some people legitimately feel that both QBs have made a case to be the starter. That will continue after both of them pile up big stats against a Big South team. Big Ol’ Hairy Dawgs 59, Charleston Southern 3

New Mexico State at Kentucky – NMSU’s “SEC butt-whuppin’ to pay the bills” tour continues. Briars 44, NMSU 13

ULM at LSU – Well, at least this paycheck game keeps the money inside the state. LSU 33, ULM 17

Vanderbilt at Misipi – The Vandy coach is probably having golden dome dreams these days, remembering the times when his teams had at least a snowball’s chance in hell to win. Misipi 40, Vandy 7

Tennessee State at Misipi St – Bulldogs keep rolling after last week’s massive comeback. Jerry Clower U 45, Tennessee St 6

Florida at Missouri – Reports of the death of Mizzou were exaggerated. Not sure they can topple Florida, even a reduced Florida. Lizards 27, Mizzou 24

South Alabama at Tennessee – Hey, look, a team from Alabama that Tennessee can beat! Rocky Medium 33, USA 10

Prairie View at Texas A&M – This would be a blowout anyway, but throw in the anger of A&M after giving away their last shot at the division title? The paycheck will be less effective after all the grief counseling PV will have to contract to heal the souls of their players after this beat-down. A&M 63, Prairie View 0

Auburn at South Carolina – After never showing up in College Station and one of the biggest gag-jobs of all time, you have to wonder what this squad is thinking. DC Derek Mason’s crew melting down last week was good fodder for all those who believe he never should have had a head coaching job. Will they rally and bounce back this week? I kinda doubt it. Fightin’ Chickens 31, war eagle 24

Marshall at Charlotte – Remember me saying I had always penciled in the Rice game as a win ever since the schedule came out? This is one I have always penciled in as a loss. We just don’t have enough on defense to stop any competent offense. Fortunately, we have an incompetent team next week to secure a bowl bid. Thundering, Stomping Herd 43, 49ers 14

Last week’s record: 5-4

Season: 76-27

NFL Week 4 Picks – Who Ya Got?

I’m terrible at picking games this year, but at least I have never given a speech where I questioned, “where is (insert name of dead person here)?” Let’s see if things get better for the picks this week. Miami at Cincinnati (Thur) – Cincy got off the losing train last...

NFL Week 3 Picks – Who Ya Got?

I’m off to my worst start ever predicting game outcomes. I can forgive myself for not picking the Jets. The only people who picked them were Mike Greenberg, Rich Eisen, and blood relatives of Jets players & employees. There are lots of overreactions – let’s...

NFL Week 2 Picks – Who Ya Got?

Well, that round of picks couldn’t have gone much worse-er. Let’s see if we can do better this time around.  LA Chargers at Kansas City (Thur) – Remember all those “No Tyreek Hill, the Chiefs are done” laments? Like ‘Bama, Ohio State, and Georgia, KC just reloaded...

NFL Week 1 Picks – Who Ya Got?

“You know you’re gettin’ old when you start making love to your wife and 10 seconds later think, ‘wait a minute, why did I come in here?’” – Larry the Cable Guy That was me on Monday, realizing I completely forgot to do my entry on week 1 of college football picks....

My Take On Mass Shootings Is a Little Different

Here we are again, in the aftermath of yet another mass shooting. The responses have been very predictable: People screaming what they believe should be done about the shooting, and people with different views screaming about how evil the people that offer those views...

Writing doesn’t come easily to everyone. There are natural-born writers just as there are natural-born speakers. Just as many writers can’t imagine giving up the keyboard for a microphone to vocalize their thoughts, many speakers cringe at the idea of sitting in front...
