OK, the bowl games are here! Yes, I’m going to offer predictions. I’ll take them one week at a time. This is the first year in recent memory that doesn’t feature a 5-7 team playing in a bowl game. That’s a refreshing change. A lot of these games feature teams I know absolutely nothing about, so I’ll just look for reasons to throw sarcasm at those games. Let’s have some fun.
December 15
Cure Bowl (Orlando): Louisiana vs TEW-lane – How the New Orleans Bowl didn’t snag this game is a mystery. Would have made for a fabulous party. But it should still be a very good game. I don’t know much about TEW-lane, other than they have a better record than they’ve had in a while. I’m really just guessing at this one. TEW-lane 25, UL 21
New Mexico Bowl (Albuquerque, NM): North Texas vs Utah State – Both teams have lost their head coaches to bigger programs. The players are left to convince their fans that they will still be strong. I’m going to play total conference bias here and pick the Conference USA team. NTU 33, USU 28
Las Vegas Bowl (Las Vegas): Arizona State vs Fresno State – Herm Edwards and his bag of quotes in Vegas. How perfectly delicious. As for the game, Fresno is better than the average Go5 team, as evidenced by their win on The (snow-covered) Blue Field. I’m rooting for Herm, but… Fresno State 23, Arizona State 20
Camellia Bowl (Montgomery, AL): Georgia Southern vs Eastern Michigan – I know very little about Eastern Michigan. The only thing I know about Georgia Southern is that they trounced Appalachian State in spite of ASU rolling to the Sun Belt title. That’s enough for me. Georgia Southern 28, EMU 21
New Orleans Bowl (New Orleans): Appalachian State vs Middle Tennessee State – ASU lost its coach to Louisville. The team will be highly motivated to prove it’s the players that are the reason for the rise of the program instead of the coach. But the program is going to take a step back, starting with this game. MTSU 29, The Other Mountaineers 27
December 18
Boca Raton Bowl (Boca Raton, FL): UAB vs Northern Illinois – I have bias here as well, as UAB is my brother’s school. NIU surprised a lot of people beating Buffalo in the MAC title game. This should be close, and should have lots of monster hits and good defense. UAB 20, NIU 14
December 19
Frisco Bowl (Dallas): Ohio vs San Diego State – If you don’t know anything about Ohio U, let a state native tell you about it. It’s a pretty good school academically. It’s in Athens, Ohio, which is Ohio U and a gigantic forest. That’s it. But kids that go there really love it. It turned out to be the perfect place for Frank Solich after having to follow Tom Osborne at Nebraska. OU always have good offenses and defenses that do just enough. Thinking they can do that one more time. The Other Ohio 26, SDSU 23
December 20
Gasparilla Bowl (Tampa): Marshall vs South Florida – This bowl has the 2nd-best name of them all (you’ll see #1 later). This is a literal home game for USF, which gives them just a little bit of an edge. USF 27, Thundering Herd 23
December 21
Bahamas Bowl (Nassau, Bahamas): Florida International vs Toledo – FIU has a pretty good offense. Pretty much the entire Mid-American Conference is one big, bland, boring team. Take the dynamic team over the boring one every time. FIU 33, Toledo 20
Idaho Potato Bowl (Boise, ID): BYU vs Western Michigan – The first few years of this bowl, they tried to get the home team on The Blue Field. Now they try for other Western schools while Boise goes to Las Vegas almost every year. This year, independent BYU comes in, against a Midwest team that ironically enough has “Western” in its name. WMU has recovered decently from Coach Row The Boat moving to Minnesota. This one might be a defensive battle. BYU 21, WMU 17
Conference title week record: 9-1
Season: 107-25
