The season of 147 bowl games continues. This round will include the College Football Playoff semifinals and several big names. Should be a very fun weekend.
Military Bowl (Annapolis), North Carolina vs. Temple – Well, it looks like 137-year-old Mack Brown still has it. UNC has over-achieved and he destroyed the other NC schools in the recruiting early signing period. No reason to think they won’t get another win at the Naval Academy. UNC-CH 33, Temple 21
Pinstripe Bowl (New York), Michigan State vs. Wake Forest – I do not get – or approve of – these football games crammed into baseball-only stadiums. I also don’t approve of Michigan State, the alma mater of Racist Jamele Hill. Wake is wildly inconsistent, and they aren’t used to stingy defenses out of the Big 14 conference. So as much as I hate to say it…. Spartans 20, Deacons 17
Texas Bowl (Houston), Texas A&M vs. Oklahoma State – Speaking of wild inconsistencies, here are two more shining examples. A&M has been more inconsistent on offense than Oklahoma State, which will prove to be their undoing. The Other Cowboys 34, A&M 24
Holiday Bowl (San Diego), USC vs. Iowa – Many talking heads bemoaning the demise of USC, who is sticking with their coach despite mediocre play and a rotten recruiting performance. Losing to a battle-hardened Iowa team won’t make anyone feel any better. Iowa 23, USC 10
Cheez-It Bowl (Phoenix), Washington State vs. Air Force – Another football game in a baseball park, although it at least has an amusing name. The game itself should be fun for people that love lots of yards. WSU 37, USAF 30
Camping World Bowl (Orlando), Notre Dame vs. Iowa State – The world loves Notre Dame so much, I’m surprised they didn’t get a more prestigious spot. They did get a nice destination and a team they should have no trouble with. Catholics 33, Cyclones 13
Cotton Bowl (Dallas), Memphis vs. Penn State – Memphis lost their coach to Florida State, and they’re facing the best defense they’ve seen all year. Not many points in this one. Penn State 20, Memphis 7
CFP-Fiesta Bowl (Phoenix), (3) Clemson vs. (2) Ohio State – It will be interesting to see how the Tigers fare in their first game of the year against a real defense. I don’t think it goes very well. Fightin’ Nuts 40, Clempson 20
CFP-Peach Bowl (Atlanta), (4) Oklahoma vs. (1) LSU – Two of the 3 best offenses in the country (along with Ohio State). This should be a track meet for the ages. LSU 44, Oklahoma 41
First Responder Bowl (Dallas), Western Michigan vs. Western Kentucky – Two teams with “Western” in their names playing in Dallas… The jokes write themselves. I’ll go with the “Western” team that has the Ar-Kansas reject QB who is having a great revenge tour. WKU 30, WMU 17
Music City Bowl (Nashville), Louisville vs. Misipi State – I’m mildly surprised Misipi State got such a good bowl, as up-and-down as they have been. Scott Satterfield is making good progress in his first year with the Cards. That should continue. Lou-EE-vull 28, Jerry Clower U 14
Redbox Bowl (Santa Clara), Illinois vs. Cal – What’s this, Illinois in a bowl game? Is this the first one of the century? Well, they got a lousy draw – a good team playing a de-facto home game. Ugh. Cal 34, Illinois 10
Orange Bowl (Miami), Virginia vs. Florida – Somebody botched the schedule. What is a major New Year’s Day bowl doing on the December 30 slate and obscure bowls in Tucson, Birmingham and Mobile coming later? Oh well. UVA is here because Clempson is in the CFP and the ACC had to send someone. This will not be pretty. Lizards 38, Wahoos 7
