February 22 was my 48th birthday. Happy birthday to me! 🙂 A lot of crazy stuff has been going on, so I’m just now getting back to the blog to post what’s going to happen over the next year.
A number of years ago I completely swore off New Year’s resolutions. They are nothing but clichés and everyone demands that you make them. And of course, the best way to ensure I don’t do something is to tell me I’m required to do it. I reasoned, my birthday is a little more than 7 weeks into the year. By that time, 99% of people have not only stopped trying to keep their resolutions, they have completely forgotten what they were. Why not make goals for the next year on my birthday? So that’s what I started doing.

First I have to reflect on my age-47 year. I expected this to be a big year, because of the significance attached to the number 47 by my father’s wife. She said a number of years ago that 47 was her favorite number – because it was odd, a prime number, and because no one else ever considered such a thing. I thought it was sort of funny, and now I use 47 whenever a situation calls for a random number. For example, when some fool is in the far left lane at a stoplight, and hits the gas when the light turns green and turns RIGHT, I’ll say, “look at the idiot making the 47-lane right turn.”
It turns out my feeling was right. The year I spent being age 47 had a lot of big things in it. There was good – I had my weight loss surgery, lost 69 pounds, and decided on a career change. There was bad – my last grandparent and a very close friend died, my wife suffered a devastating spinal cord injury and we face a bigger pile of medical bills than ever before. There was also shocking – I decided on a career change. Next week I will be walking away from 18 years at my corporate job to start my own business. So yes, it was a big year in a lot of ways.
So what about this coming year? As little stock as I put in astrology, I like to have some fun with it. 2018 is the year of the dog on the Chinese Zodiac. If you were born in 2006, 1994, 1982, 1970, 1958, etc. then the dog is your Chinese Zodiac sign. So for folks like me, born 1970, this is it. It is MY year! Don’t get in my way, because I’ll run over you! 🙂 Here are my official goals to be completed by Feb 21, 2019:
-
Get to 160 pounds, my current goal weight. (As of 3/14, I have 55 pounds to go.)
-
Get the total knee replacement on both of my arthritic knees.
-
Earn $50,000 in revenue in my new business.
Not many, but plenty of focus. Life is meant to be lived, not just spent in existence. Let’s do this!
